One of New York’s great icons as well as one of the great feats of engineering of the 19th century, the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge is hard to miss if you visit New York City. Completed in 1883, the bridge, which was for a time the longest suspension bridge in the world, crosses the East River connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn. Brooklyn Bridge was the brainchild of German engineer John Roebling who would tragically never live to see the bridge’s completion, dying of tetanus after having his foot (which was crushed on the site) amputated. The stunning suspension bridge can be crossed by foot, bicycle or car.
