Canary Wharf is a huge complex housing mainly offices and shops in East London located on the site of the West India Docks which closed in 1980. The name “Canary Wharf” comes from one of the docks that used to import fruit from the Canary Islands. After the docks were closed down and the new complex was built, over 100,000 people were employed to work in its offices and shops and the Jubilee Place shopping centre was opened, making Canary Wharf a major shopping destination.
The Wharf is home to the UK's three largest buildings: The Canary Wharf Tower, 8 Canada Square and the Citigroup Centre. You will find major banks and firms such as Barclays, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Thomson Reuters and Trinity Mirror located at Canary Wharf. A thriving urban complex like no other, where you can work, eat, shop, practice sport or just gawp at the impressive modern architecture.
