Christ Church Cathedral is located in historic central Dublin, close to Wood Quay by the River Liffey, at the end of Dame Street. The original cathedral was built in 1038 by Sitriuc, the Danish Viking king of Dublin and was subsequently extended, rebuilt and refurbished during Norman and later Victorian rule. Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin is also known as the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, and is the seat of both the Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland’s archbishops. Dublin’s Christ Church has been the setting for a number of important events in Irish history; Henry II, the Anglo-Norman monarch received Holy Communion here in 1171, and during the Reformation, Henry VIII designated Christ Church as the seat of the Protestant Church of Ireland. In the mid 16th century, Christ Church, Dublin also played host to the first mass and bible readings given in the English language in Ireland instead of Latin, and the cathedral served as Irish parliament during the rule British King James II.
