The Chueca neighbourhood or Barrio de Chueca in Madrid is a cool part of the city whose primary inhabitants are gay, though there are plenty of places which are hetero-friendly. Just north of downtown and Puerta del Sol, this fashionable area has something for everyone.
Originally this area was run down with drugs but now has completely converted into an affluent and thriving gay community. There are upscale boutiques and funky shops by independent designers. There are chic cafes alongside some very simple neighbourhood style cafes which retain some of the original flavour of the area. You can sit outside in one of the many squares and soak up the sun or sample a little of the nightlife. Some of the city’s best and most interesting restaurants can be found in the Chueca neighbourhood. Though it is hetero-friendly, there are plenty of stores which target the gay crowd, with travel agencies, video stores and more.
