Fusilier’s Arch is a Dublin war memorial, located at the entrance to Saint Stephen’s Gate, a famous Dublin park, within easy reach of the vibrant Grafton Street. Fusilier’s Arch was built to commemorate the lives of the Irish soldiers of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, killed in action under the orders of the British Crown in the Second Boer War in South Africa (1899), and most poignantly, in the First World War (1914-1918), where the regiment saw action on the Western Front, Gallipoli and Salonika, with the loss of approximately 5,000 lives. The soldiers who served in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers were mainly recruited from the Dublin area and the surounding rural counties of Kildare, Wicklow and Carlow. The regiment was founded in 1881, and was disbanded shortly after the declaration of the Irish Free State in 1922, under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The design of Dublin’s Fusilier’s Arch is based on the Arch of Titus in Rome, and is approximately 10 metres high and just over 3 metres wide.
