Istiklal Avenue
Istiklal Caddesi (English: Independence Avenue) is arguably the most famous street in Istanbul. This mainly pedestrian street still has a charming antique tram running along it and is packed with things to see and do. Historically during the times of the famed Orient Express Istiklal Avenue was called Cadde-i Kebir or Grande Rue de Pera by French intellectuals who gathered here, and was a glamourous place to see and be seen. However, its glitz and glam days gave way to rampant crime and dilapidation.
Today there has been a revival on Istiklal Avenue and it has been restored to its former glory. You can grab a tea at one of the charming cafes, shop at the beautiful boutiques, sample lokum at a patisserie and much more. Istiklal Avenue is located in the historic Beyoğlu district and begins from the area near Galata Tower and leads to Taksim Square. Near here don’t miss the Çiçek Pasajı (Flower Passage), and Balık Pazarı (The Fish Market).
