Plaza Mayor
The Plaza Mayor was built during the Habsburg period and is a central focal point of the Madrid. This square is just moments from the Puerta del Sol and is a vast sunny place with outdoor cafes and tapas bars. It is rectangular in shape rimmed by colonnades. The Casa de la Panaderia is the main building which hosts municipal and cultural functions, dominates the Plaza Mayor.
This square has had a multitude of functions since its inception, including a gory past of public executions, bullfights and public penance during the infamous Inquisition, but also has had rosier periods where it has hosted markets, football matches, and more. Today you can bring in the New Year here, enjoy celebrations of all sorts, free concerts, or just sit in the sun and enjoy the people watching. Underneath the Plaza Mayor are several "cave" bars where you can sample the speciality tapa of each and share a pitcher of sangria with friends as you listen to live music.
