The Puerta del Sol is Madrid's central square which is impossible to miss and must not be missed by any visitor to this city. This sunny plaza is surrounded by stately buildings and there is plenty to do in and around this area. To drive home the importance of this capital's busiest plaza, there is a plaque marking "kilometre zero" of the city, the symbolic centre of Spain.
Here you can ring in the New Year by joining Spaniards in eating a grape for each toll of the clock for good luck. You can see the symbol of Madrid in Puerta del Sol's Bear scratching at the Madroño tree, an image which is repeated throughout the city. The Tio Pepe advertisement is a national treasure and a long standing landmark of the city. From Puerta del Sol you can reach on foot many of the city's main attractions including the Royal Palace, the Plaza Mayor, the Opera, Plaza Cibeles and the Prado Museum and much more.
