The Rijksmuseum is the Dutch National Museum, with a huge collection which includes everything from paintings to coins. It occupies a beautiful, richly decorated 19th-century building, and has recently emerged from a decade-long restoration. Among its most celebrated artworks are masterpieces like Rembrandt's The Night Watch and Vermeer's The Milkmaid, but the museum also boasts a superb collection of Asian art.

Did you know...?
The museum's first purchase was The Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn, which later became used as a powerful symbol of Dutch resistance to enemy attack. If you look hard, you can see that the word 'Holland' was painted onto one of the swan's eggs in the nest.

Practicalities
The Rijksmuseum is very well connected by public transport to the rest of the city, and a number of tram and bus services stop nearby. The nearest metro station is Weesperplein, where you can pick up a tram to the museum.
