The observatory was built in 1675 under King Charles II who also appointed John Flamsteed as Astronomer Royal who was to use his knowledge regarding the position of the stars to aid maritime navigation. A French Anarchist attempted to bomb the Royal Observatory in 1894 but was unsuccessful. The observatory is nowadays partly used as a museum and it also houses the Peter Harrison Planetarium which opened to the public on the 25th of May 2007 and has a total of 120 seats, costing a total of 15 million pounds to build.
