Statue of Liberty, New York
The Statue of Liberty is probably the most emblematic monument in New York City and is one of the most recognizable symbols of this city and the United States worldwide. It was a gift from the French commemorating the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence from the UK, dedicated on October 28, 1886, and represents the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution. The Statue of Liberty measures 93 meters in height including the foundation. The woman wears a stola, crown and sandals treading on a broken chain. She carries a torch raised in her right hand and a tablet inscribing the date of the Declaration in her left hand. During the era of immigration by boat to the United States, the Statue of Liberty was frequently the first view of the country greeting immigrants before reaching Ellis Island. Today visitors can visit the statue and climb narrow steps up to her crown.
