The Vatican museums located in the Vatican City in Rome, offer an extensive education in the history of the Catholic Church. The museums are over 500 years old and are visited by over four million people each year. To explore the Vatican Museums takes a lot of time, as there is just so much to see in its many museums.
The Sistine Chapel is found at the end of the 'Museo Pio-Clementino' which contains 54 galleries or 'salas'; the only way to the Sistine Chapel is to go through all of the salas. Another interesting museum is the Egyptian Museum (Museo Egiziano) which contains ancient artefacts of Egyptian society, including the 'Book of the Dead'. Also, there are famous works of art to be visited, such as Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Saint Jerome, 'The Entombment of Christ' by Caravaggio, as well as paintings by Raphael, Giotto and Nicolas Poussin.
