Albufeira, once a fishing village, has developed into one of the most popular resorts on the Algarve, thanks to its magnificent beaches, balmy climate, fantastic cuisine, and extensive facilities for all kinds of watersports and family fun. Although it has grown rapidly in the last couple of decades, Albufeira has managed to hang on to plenty of old-fashioned charm in its old town, where the cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed cottages, most now converted into inviting restaurants and bars. There’s more nightlife to be found along The Strip, which is packed with bars and clubs, but the town’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly its glorious beaches, which include the Praia dos Pescadores and the Praia do Túnel in front of the old town. Many of the hotels in Albufeira offer up rooftop terraces with spectacular sea views, so you can relax while watching the sun set over the water in the evenings.
Food & drink:
Seafood is the highlight of the cuisine in Albufeira, with a dazzling variety of fish and shellfish available. Often served simply grilled, to make the most of its freshness, it is also used in such popular dishes as ‘cataplana’, prepared with clams, and ‘caldeirada’, a traditional fisherman’s stew with potatoes. Other local treats include delicious cheeses, hams and other charcuterie, and sweets and pastries made with figs, oranges or almonds.
Off the beaten track:
Head inland to escape the crowds along the coast. You could visit the picturesque town of Silves, piled on a hilltop and crowned by a fortress, or head to charming Monchique to pick up local ceramics and other handicrafts.
