***Provisional Description*** Laid out in a grid pattern in the late 16th Century, the hilltop Bairro Alto is one of picturesque districts of the city adjacent to Chiado area. Since the 1980s, this has been Lisbon's best-known nightlife zone, with countless small bars and restaurants alongside the older 'Casas de Fado' where you can enjoy the best live shows of this traaditional Portuguese music.
Bairro Alto has a quiet area and a nightlife area to choose from. Much restoration work has taken place over the last four years, and many new buildings now stand side by side to old, peeling houses and tiny grocery shops. Lisbon's city central areas, such as Alfama and Principe Real, are all within walking distance. Visit the Galerias Pombalina and the Museo do Chiado, enjoy the views and the authentic azulejos (Portuguese tiles) style all around. Parque de São Pedro also makes a scenic picnic spot, as it is overlooked by the Castelo de São Jorge.
Public transportation is very near, including the popular number 28.
