About Lombardy
Highlights:
Northern Italy's expansive Lombardy region is a patchwork quilt of geographic phenomena from the majestic peaks of the Italian Alps to its tranquil lakes, valleys with vineyards, and medieval towns. Then there's Milan, the capital of Lombardy and Italian fashion, where you can get a bird's-eye view from the terraces of the Gothic Duomo or sip Prosecco canal-side in the Navigli neighbourhood. Spend a day exploring Bergamo's cobbled plazas and ancient cathedrals and then head up to Lake Como to get away from it all. Cruising around the lake's pastel villages and romantic villas is a must! To the east, Italy's Lake Garda is the perfect place to try your hand at water sports and relax on a balcony overlooking the lake at one of our gorgeous hotels in Lombardy. Oenophiles can follow the wine trains of the Po Valley and active travellers can hit the ski slopes around Livigno and Bormio in the foothills of the Alps. Lombardy truly has something for everyone!
Food & Drink:
Sip on sparkling wines from Franciacorta and nibble on aperitivo with an Aperol cocktail in Milan. While visiting Lake Como, make sure to sample some of the delicate lake fish grilled with Italian olive oil and fresh herbs. Lombardy is also the region of Mascarpone and Grana cheese, so make sure to partake at any opportunity! Other fabulous local dishes include saffron risotto and celebrated charcuterie like the salami from Varzi.
Off the Beaten Track:
While Lake Como and Lake Garda receive the most tourist traffic, the smaller Lake Iseo between the other two is a fantastic alternative, full of charming medieval architecture and plenty of hotels with panoramic lake views.
