Roman ruins, fine wines, lofty cathedrals and a fountain to rival Trevi, it's no wonder Lyon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Live out your French fantasy by staying at one of our lovely hotels in Lyon.
What to See
Start sightseeing in Place des Terraux with its impressive Bartholdi Fountain depicting France as the driver of four wild horses (France's four rivers). Opposite the fountain lies the Musée des Beaux-Arts where you can linger over works by Rubens, Monet, Gauguin, Picasso and Degas to name a few. Cross the footbridge towards the Palais de Justice to enter Lyon's emblematic old town, Vieux Lyon, where you can marvel over the city's Gothic cathedral before taking the cable car up to the Fourvière Basilica of Notre Dame on the hill above the city. Your bird's-eye view of the city won't be complete until you've walked the ruins of the still-functional Roman amphitheatre perched above Lyon for a breathtaking glimpse into the past.
What to Do
Don't leave Lyon without pulling up a chair at a bouchon (a traditional Lyonnaise restaurant serving up home-cooking) for a plate of coq au vin and a glass of Beaujolais. Visitors in June or July can check out the Fourvière Nights Festival hosted at the Roman amphitheatre featuring opera, theatre and much more. December visitors can partake in the Festival of Lights, when the entire city sparkles in light for 3 nights. Shop till you drop in the “Golden Square” for luxury brands and upscale boutiques just above Place Bellecour and top it all off with a night at the Lyon Opera.
